Fox Fair Finds - Cacao Rocks

Cacao Rocks is Jason Megoulas. I find what he says as interesting as the stuff he makes. Check it out.

Alecca: What does 'Cacao Rocks' mean?
Jason: Cacao Rocks means exactly that: cocoa kicks a**... it means being in a good mood from dusk till dawn. It means lots of colours, tropicalia with rock n roll, git it? How did I choose it? Hmmm, one morning, D'A
rcy Foxx asked me how I'm going to call what I make and it was the first thing that came to my mind... I'd just finished drinking my cocoa ... lol. Sounds good though, huh?

A:What do you make and how long does each item take you?
J: I'm mainly into sculpture, but you are probably more interested in my accessories, even though I view my accessories as works of art too. Each one is unique. I use various materials, from wool and textiles to chains and toys. I try to combine the nu-rave with the industrial aesthetics, using some pop elements.

How long do they take to make? I don't know. To make a small necklace it will take 2 or 3 times of listening to Bjork's “Volta”... But it may take me months too as I'll be looking for artifacts to add. The dolls take up to 2 days. The hardest part is to come up with the idea. I never make the same thing twice..

A: When and how did you start?
J: Since i can remember myself -typical!... my dad is a sculptor and a designer... since I was little, I was always in his way... later on in high school, I started making necklaces for friends and a bit later clothes for me, as I couldn't find anything I liked in the stores... Now it has become my psychosis... I wake up in the morning and ask myself “What are we going to make today?”

A: Which audience would you like to see wearing them?
J: I think it's the audience that choses and not the creators... To meet someone who is wearing something I made, is the best reward for me...

A: Where can you find Cacao Rocks items?
J: You can find what I make at The Fox Fair, at Teeter Totter,
www.myspace.com/teetertotterjewellery and by contacting me directly at cacaorocks@gmail.com and www.myspace.com/jasonmegoulas

Fox Fair Finds - Psarokokalo

If Psarokokalo is around, it is gonna catch your eye for sure. The peculiar stuffed dolls and quirky accessories under the brand, somehow stand out. Psarokokalo is Maria Polyxa.

Her etsy.com shop reads:

"psarokokalo = fishbone in greek

psarokokalo is: handmade, well made designer goods that are sophisticated yet fun... I try to make things from recycling materials , change the form and the function of things into my own creations. my creations come from a nonsmoking studio we do not have cats but we do have a dog called Eric Satie!"

Alecca: How did you come up with the name?
Maria: psarokokalo is my nick name since my BA studies 1998, I had a project then that included an image of Picasso eating a fish bone so I ended up with psarokokalo!

A: What is it about stuffed animals?
M: I do hate and despise stuffed animals and anything that has to do with animal abuse and production of animal fur and bones sometimes ... It is amazing to try and imitate their amazing shape and characteristics in art and design , it is great inspiration for me. So, go for fabric stuffed animals people and leave the real ones alone!

A: What other stuff do you make? What materials do you use?
M: I make human shaped dolls , some jewellery, little books, a little clothing when I have a good idea. I use mainly fabric, plastic, wood.

A: What's your relationship with fashion?
M: Most of my materials are upcycled from scraps of fabrics I gather from fashion designers, plastics and other finds from the beach, scraps of wood from wood-technicians.

A: Where can we see/get what you make?
M: You can e-shop my work at http://www.psarokokalo.etsy.com (us dollars) and http://en.dawanda.com/shop/psarokokalo (euro)

Fox Fair Finds - Marlidarling

Costume designer Marli Aleiferi aka Marlidarling does the loveliest handbags I've seen in a while. Made from retro cotton fabric, they are all handmade and unique, so there's no way you'll meet another girl holding the same one as you. Machine washable, size fits A4, controversially colourful and retailing for just 19 euros.

Alecca: how did the name come up?
Marli: it was what some friends used to call me during fashion school. It is witty and fun and carries a bit of myself, like the bags I make.

A: you are a costume designer. Why bags?
M: a bag is the most personal and functional part of one's outfit. I love tote bags. They are so convenient for all times of the day, casual in the morning, playfull at night and always fit everything. In times when fashion becomes so uniform, I felt the way to make a difference is by holding a unique, simple and practical bag.

A: where can we find your bags?
M: they are all limited edition items, produced in very small numbers. At the moment you can find them exclusively at The Fox Fair. I am planning to register an etsy.com shop soon. Till then, you can reach me at fashfab@hotmail.com

Fox Fair Finds - Euangelia

Euagelia in action. The young designer, styling a visitor in person. Her exhaggerated bum attire stole the show without a doubt. I thought her silicone covered brooches were special. More on Euangelia, here.

Lucky but we don't know it

I have said it before, I'll say it again: we are lucky but we don't know it (or we don't care). There are all kinds of opportunities for everybody who says they are into fashion, to meet the designers in person, wear what they make, be styled by them, discover new names, but no. We don't bother visiting them, we don't see a point in discovering them before they've made it to print.

Fox Fair is a good example. This Bazaar takes place (almost) every Saturday at Bacaro's open space. It is free to enter and features carefully selected new Greek designers, brands and shops.

The idea behind it, as the organisers Danae and Nicholas shared, was to recreate the atmosphere of Berlin streetmarkets where hundreds of original fashion gems wait patiently to be taken home by young people with special taste and original style. Most items there are unique.

But guess what: we don't care. Silly (scary) as it may sound, some of the big names of tomorrow go there in person, make stunning presentations of their work, sell at special Fox Fair prices, but we are not there. Something's not right here.

Let me inform you that the next Fox Fair is on the 23rd, which is the Saturday after the next. This time, Pansik students will make and display limited edition t-shirts to be sold between 15-30 euros with profits going towards good causes such as Dromous Zois. I hope I come across some familiar faces there, save the date, it's really worth it.

Till then, I'll dedicate a few posts to my Fox Fair finds. Fashion is not only cheap stuff produced in masses by market leaders. Hope you like what I chose, stay tuned & get excited!

Fluorescent Feet

As of today, it's officially The Sales Period in Greece. Em... I feel totally ungrateful as my "can't-wait-for-sales" excitement has suddenly become "can't-wait-for-Spring-collections".

I was sorting out My Documents, when I came across my pictures from last Hellenic Fashion Week. And there they were, Frida Karadima's semi-wedge fluorescent peep-toes. I liked them with her Summer designs and as part of Al Giga's whole fluorescent art directional concept, but I thought that Frida in total black, totally rocked them!

Then a few weeks later, my friend Sandra wore them for the very first alternative catwalk at the Fox Fair, Athens. She fell in love with them too and since then we are on a mission to make them ours.

Is it Spring yet? Is it Spring yet? Is it Spring yet? ...
